Actually, it has made me more convinced than ever that my g-g grandfather William Aitken was the biological father of Keir Hardie. The fact that Keir Hardie is registered at birth as James Keir Aitken - and William Aitken's father was called James ... It was a tradition in Scotland to name the first son after the paternal grandfather. The part about Portsea prison is also fascinating - especially to see that out of the 10 prisoners listed, 2 came from Ireland, and 3 from Scotland! I have looked it up on the internet and it was a civil prison, rather than criminal - so I want to do more research on this. Thanks again to Amber for this - you don't know how much it means to my dad and myself.
